Dave Mustaine is one of the most influential, complex, and controversial figures in metal history. Born in 1961 in California, from a humble and troubled family, Mustaine found in music a way to escape and express himself from a young age. Before Megadeth, he was the first guitarist of Metallica (1982-83), where he contributed riffs and compositions that would later become thrash classics. His abrupt expulsion from Metallica in 1983, while traveling to New York, deeply marked his character and sparked a historic rivalry. He channeled that frustration and ambition into creating Megadeth, a band that quickly became a pillar of thrash metal and a key part of the Big Four alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. As a guitarist and composer, Mustaine is a pioneer in thrash development: his precise riffs, aggressive solos, and innovative tunings (Drop D, alternate picking) raised the technical standard of the genre. His raspy voice and lyrics loaded with social, political, and existential criticism gave the group its own identity.
