Killing Is My Business Era

1984-1986
The Killing Is My Business era marked Megadeth's true artistic takeoff when Dave Mustaine managed to gather the ideal musicians to materialize his vision. In early 1984, Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson, both veterans of the Los Angeles jazz fusion scene, joined Mustaine and Ellefson, completing the band's first classic lineup. Poland, with his background in jazz and progressive rock, brought unprecedented melodic sophistication to thrash metal, while Samuelson introduced complex rhythmic patterns and dynamics that elevated the music far above genre standards. This lineup remained remarkably stable throughout 1984 and most of 1985, allowing them to develop exceptional musical chemistry that was captured on their debut album 'Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!' (1985). The album immediately established Megadeth as pioneers of technical thrash metal, with compositions like 'Mechanix' and 'The Skull Beneath the Skin' that showcased revolutionary instrumental complexity. However, internal tensions began to manifest during the 1986 tour. Chris Poland temporarily left the band in mid-year due to creative differences and personal issues, being replaced in concerts by Mike Albert, who served as touring guitarist for several months. This temporary situation allowed the band to continue their live commitments while Poland resolved his affairs. Fortunately, Poland returned later in 1986 to participate in the recording sessions for the second album, demonstrating that differences could be overcome in favor of the music. This lineup laid the foundation for the Megadeth sound: the combination of thrash aggression with technical virtuosity and progressive elements that would distinguish the band from their contemporaries.
