Mike Albert is a Los Angeles guitarist with an eclectic resume whose association with Megadeth came at a critical moment: he was the man who replaced Chris Poland as lead guitarist during part of the 1986 tour. With broad experience in genres like heavy metal, jazz, and Latin rock, Albert was a respected session musician in the California scene. In mid-1986, when Chris Poland briefly left Megadeth due to internal conflicts, Dave Mustaine called on Mike Albert to take over lead guitar duties for the remaining Wake Up Dead tour dates. His style, more bluesy and classic compared to Poland's, capably delivered solos from 'Killing Is My Business...' and previewed material from 'Peace Sells...' before its release. After the tour segment ended, Chris Poland returned to the group in October 1986 and Mike Albert stepped aside, having contributed his talent when needed. His contributions can be heard on some 1986 bootlegs, and Mustaine has praised his professionalism when recalling that era. Before and after Megadeth, Albert built a varied career: in the '70s he played with Ruben and The Jets, a band mentored by Frank Zappa, delving into rock fusion. He also joined a version of the Chicano jazz-rock band El Chicano, touring with legends like Santana and Earth, Wind & Fire. Known for his versatility, he collaborated with musicians such as Don Felder (Eagles) and Billy Cobham on special projects. In the '90s he formed the Mike Albert Project, releasing albums focused on blues rock that showcase his most personal side. Today, Albert remains active in music, combining teaching with performances in the LA scene, always proud to have been—even briefly—a part of the Megadeth family.
