Megadeth's original formation was conceived in Los Angeles after Dave Mustaine's departure from Metallica. In its first weeks, Mustaine recruited bassist David Ellefson and guitarist Greg Handevidt.
Initially they sought a main vocalist and tried Lawrence "Lor" Kane, but he only stayed with the band for a few weeks. The first public lineup in 1983 consisted of Dave Mustaine (guitar), Lor Kane (vocals), Greg Handevidt (guitar) and David Ellefson (bass).
After Lor Kane's departure, Mustaine also took on vocals, thus defining his role as frontman.
