From Earth to the Moon: Dave Mustaine's ambitious dream for Megadeth's farewell

Dave Mustaine reveals his ambition for Megadeth's final concert to be held in outer space, possibly on the Moon, before ending their career with the upcoming 17th studio album and final world tour. He cites the precedent of celebrities and entrepreneurs like William Shatner and Richard Branson traveling to space, arguing that commercial space travel is progressing faster than people think. He stated this would be a fitting climax and a symbol for the band, also reflecting on the importance of retiring by choice and the future of humanity in space. Mustaine estimates Megadeth's farewell tour could run for three to five years.

Inspired by the advancements in private space travel, Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine envisions an extraordinary tour finale. The frontman, who has confirmed that their imminent seventeenth studio album and accompanying world tour will be their final chapter, tells Metal Hammer he wants his last concert to be in space. No, really!

“I hope we'll be playing up in space,” he reveals. “I think that will be a really fitting climax. And I'm not talking about on the side of a vomit comet. A gig on the Moon, a full moon landing, that would be cool.”

Referring to figures like William Shatner and Richard Branson, MegaDave adds: “I saw they sent up a bunch of celebrities into space and I thought 'Well, if them, why not me?', you know? I'm just watching how that all progresses. I know Elon Musk and Richard Branson were working on interstellar travel. I think people are going to be travelling to space a lot sooner than you think.”

Mustaine closely observes the advancements in space technology, convinced that the evolution of private travel could make his dream real. The band is currently preparing their final album and a farewell tour that could last for several years. Mustaine also addressed the personal significance of closing a chapter: “There are many who have reached the end of their careers, either accidentally or intentionally. Most of them do not manage to retire at the peak by their own choice, and that is the situation I find myself in right now in my life.”

Without losing his characteristic sense of humor, Mustaine joked about the idea of forgetting something essential before heading to Mars, turning any oversight into an interplanetary odyssey. This touch of humor demonstrates that Megadeth maintains its rebellious and defiant spirit.
